North Eastern Kansas Weekend
January 5-6, 2007

Sunday morning I drove up to Clay Center to photograph the beautiful County Courthouse and revisit the tiny zoo.

1901 Clay County Courthouse

I was unhappy with the tiny, barren cages at the zoo when I visited Clay Center in 2006, and there has lately been some heated blogging as a new Clay Center resident has complained about the conditions while other locals think it is wonderful.

As during my previous visit, I found that the animals appear very healthy, but many of the cages are little more than kennels. The zoo's biggest cage has a huge wheel that is enjoyed by two enthusiastic squirrels. The zoo has a new black bear which has taken over the cage previously used by the otters.

Most of the smaller animals like this red fox seem unafraid of visitors.
