When we slowed down at Stellwagen Bank we started seeing whales pretty regularly. Perhaps twice as often as the guide on the PA would notice. The best were a female and calf fin whale which we saw several times, once getting within perhaps 120 feet. The calf would cross under the female to the opposite side and the guide said that was probably nursing. They looked huge! Fin whales are the second largest species (blue whales
are the largest). In the North Atlantic they get up to about 65 feet, though
these weren't that large.
The last two whales were a fin and a minke that were fairly close to each other at the edge of the harbor, but we didn't watch them long as the boat had to get back. After the cruise we skipped the Blue line of the "T" and walked to Government Center to catch the Green Line back to the hotel. Along the walk we stopped for lunch at Faneuil Hall Market. There were dozens of options and we selected Durgin Park, a 130 year old tavern with good, reasonable food. I enjoyed the clam chowder and fish & chips. |
