Thursday morning was the best part of my trip. Tom & Jan Hise, Paula and I went on a whale watch cruise with the New England Aquarium. It was a beautiful morning: sunny, 70 degrees and light swells. Most of the people on the top deck of the catamaran retreated when the cruise started, but we found a small sheltered spot at the very front of the upper deck where we could see in all directions, brace ourselves against the movement of the boat and keep all but our head and shoulders out of the wind.

Not a disaster - the fire department trains next to the airport

The trip out of the harbor, past many small islands with old forts and lighthouses, was wonderful. Then out nearly 30 miles to Stellwagen Bank where the whales feed. On the way out, Jan spotted the first whale (a minke whale I think), which no one else on the top deck noticed.
