San Marco and the Campanile
Tuesday, day 4
After breakfast, we walked out to the nearby vaporetto
stop and caught waterbus #5.1 around to the far side of Venice, where we
switched to waterbus #4.2 to Murano.
The 5.1 route took us around the south shore of the Dorsoduro
sestieri, which includes the highest land areas of Venice. This route then
took us past the shipping area, up the Canale Scomenzera through an industrial
area including the cruise terminal and ferry port. Eventually we went a
short distance on the Grand Canal (Canal Grande), past the Santa Lucia,
and took the Canale di Cannaregio out to the north shore of the Cannaregio
sestiere. Where the Cannaeregio and Grand canals met, we saw a police officer
in a booth, checking boat speeds with radar.
